De Korne is the exclusive licence holder for the German manufacturer sp.ICE, which produces ice battery systems that harness the latent energy released in the phase transition of water to ice. Trade magazine Technisch Installateur spoke with our own Ezra van der Ven about the technology and its applications.
What sets these systems apart: they are built from affordable plastic heat exchangers and filled with ordinary water, with no expensive materials involved. They can be used as a supplementary source for heat pumps, as cold storage for the summer months, and as a way to shift electricity consumption to times when the grid is under less strain.
